Our Top Tips for Self-Care…

If someone asked you if you take care of yourself, you’d probably say ‘yes’ without hesitation. But if they asked you HOW you look after yourself, would you find it difficult to list the ways..?

Self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Although it’s a simple concept in theory, tuning into your body and taking time to nourish it properly is something we very often overlook. Good self-care is key to improved mood, productivity, creativity and reduced anxiety. It’s also key to a good relationship and better communication with yourself and others.

Self-care is something that refuels us, rather than takes from us. And it isn’t a selfish act either. It is not only about considering our needs; it is rather about knowing what we need to do in order to take care of ourselves, being subsequently, able to take care of and be amongst others as well.
Here are some top tips for making sure you dedicate some time to your own self care:
* Allocate time. If you have ever found yourself craving even half an hour in the bath and not managing that? It won’t happen if you don’t plan ahead. You might not have a week to spare to check yourself into a health spa, but you could take a single day off work and plan some restorative activities. Don’t leave it to chance!
* Make it sustainable. Whatever you choose to do with your self-care time, make sure you bring something away from the experience that you can carry forwards into day to day life. Whether that’s a few yoga or stretching techniques you can practise at home, or nutritional or sleep knowledge you can employ, don’t let the experience be a flash-in-the-pan temporary fix.
* Share it. Consider self-care with friends or like-minded people. Hell, you might even sign yourself up for something that puts you in an environment of meeting new people and making new friendships – it could be a bootcamp or a choir or a book club, tase human interactions are as important as the activity itself.
* Reduce the hassle and the expense. If partaking in ’self-care’ involves spending a fortune and packing your bags for 7 days, get on a flight and inter-connecting transfers, you’re likely to be more stressed that you need to be. There are plenty of things on your doorstep that you can immerse yourself in. And those are also the things you are most likely to do on a regular basis, which is what will have the most positive, regular impact on your physical and emotional well-being…versus a one-off trip to Mongolia to find yourself.
